I've done it plenty of times (don't think I've ever reinstalled,
actually). Just modify /etc/apt/sources.list, then apt-get
dist-upgrade.
If you're doing a big upgrade this often fails at some point, but for
some reason it usually sorts itself out after a few more interations of
apt-get dist-upgrade (or sometimes apt-get -f install; just read the
errors, follow directions, and keep trying and it generally goes fine).
